GENERAL SESSION: Inspired by Yosemite: The Photographs of Ansel Adams and John Sexton.
Join John Sexton for an informative and entertaining audio-visual presentation, “Inspired by Yosemite: The Photographs of Ansel Adams and John Sexton.” Sexton’s first visit to Yosemite was at age two, sixty-five years ago. He has been actively photographing Yosemite for more than forty-five years. It was in Yosemite that Sexton first studied with legendary photographer Ansel Adams at his 1973 annual Yosemite photography workshops. Sexton later assisted and taught at a number of Ansel Adams workshops, and from 1979 until Ansel’s death served as his photographic and technical assistant, and later as his technical consultant. During the presentation John will share images, along with personal recollections and anecdotes from his six-year close working relationship with Ansel Adams. The presentation will focus on Ansel’s photography of Yosemite, which Ansel first photographed in 1916. Attendees will see some of Ansel’s best-known Yosemite photographs transformed on the screen from the negative to the final print, progressing through various phases in the evolution of a finely crafted expressive print. In addition, Sexton will discuss many of the personal aspects of working side by side with his friend and mentor Ansel Adams. Sexton will also share images from his own illustrious career in photography. Sexton is an articulate speaker with a delightful sense of humor, and a passion for photography and the environment. Attendees will gain information and inspiration from this lively presentation.

Bridalveil Fall with Harold Davis

We will carpool to Bridalveil Falls. The walk to the base of the falls is short, but it can be very icy and treacherous. Clip-on style crampons recommended. Be prepared for very wet conditions. Bridalveil Falls is one of the world's most elegant waterfalls. We will photograph ice formations, water in motion, Bridalveil Creek below the falls, and other aspects of this superb landscape.

Cook's Meadow with Charlie Cramer and John Sexton

Cook’s meadow is a beautiful meadow that both Charlie Cramer and John Sexton love to explore. The meadow is situated right in front of Yosemite Falls, and provides incredible variety of photographic possibilities. It offers stunning views of Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, Glacier Point, and Sentinel Rock. Magnificent examples of oak trees abound, with one famous and singular Elm tree remaining. (A non-native tree, it was planted in the mid 1800s). The Merced River runs nearby, with a bridge that provides an excellent vantage point for all kinds of compositions. Walk across it, and the Yosemite Chapel, the oldest building in the Valley, is right there. Depending on weather conditions, there will be possibilities from intimate natural details to grand vistas as we explore the meadow in the early morning light. We will be discussing the importance of light, and the organizing of subject elements within the frame, as key foundations for effective photographs. Charlie and John, along with Anne Larsen (who will be assisting on the field session) will be looking over your shoulder offering constructive and supportive comments on your images during the field session. A brief classroom session is planned at the end of the excursion. A tripod is required for this field session. Participants should bring the photographic equipment (lenses, filters, shades, etc.) they normally use. Participants should also bring the viewing frame received upon conference check-in to this field session.

We will walk to Cook's Meadow from the Yosemite Valley Lodge.

Upper Yosemite Fall Trail with Jack Curran

Upper Yosemite Falls Trail
One of the most beautiful trails in Yosemite, The Upper Yosemite Falls trail, provides multiple opportunities to capture the elegance of the falls as well as majestic views of the valley and peaks, including Half Dome. As time permits and depending on the trail condition and the water flow, our goal will be to move up trail to shoot the upper falls where we may find some attractive icy conditions around the falls as well as Half Dome across the Valley. This hike has significant elevation gain, and can be a bit rocky in place, and while we won't have time to go all the way to the top and make it back in time for the 10:30 presentations, we will find several places to stop and use our medium to long lenses to capture the falls and valley. Of course, whenever we are in the field, we will always adapt to the weather and conditions to get the best shots!
Latest update:
I was able to do a location scout and shoot several image this week on the Upper Yosemite Falls trail. The water flow is really pretty good for this time of year. However, I want to let everyone know this trail is steep and we will take our time going up. It took me a total 1:15 minutes (I’m fairly slow) to get to a wonderful overlook of the Falls and Half Dome. I shot for about 40 minutes and then hustled down, which was much easier.

El Capitan Meadow is a favorite location of mine as it is with many photographers. Although access to the meadow is somewhat restricted in recent years, we will find both intimate scenes and broader views of El Capitan and Cathedral Rocks. There are good opportunities at the El Capitan bridge also. The oaks in the meadow are wonderful subjects. Depending on conditions and weather, we may find good reflections and ice along the river. Maybe we'll have snow!

Sentinel Bridge with Charlotte Gibb and Michael Shainblum

Sentinel Bridge is famous for its spectacular views of Half Dome reflected in the Merced River, but there is so much more here to photograph than this famous view. Situated on the far side of Cook’s Meadow, there are fantastic compositions to be made of Yosemite Falls. In fact, this time of year you can see a rainbow on Upper Yosemite Fall on a sunny morning, so bring a long lens to capture this beautiful phenomenon. There’s a possibility of mist along the river here as well. And, if we are really lucky, a snowstorm makes this spot absolutely magical. As we wander along the gentle paths, we will help guide you to make more powerful compositions that reveal your own style and personal relationship with the landscape

MINI WORKSHOP: Creating an Expressive Image with Alan Ross

An expressive image goes beyond the recording of an event, place or person. It tells a story, shares a feeling or reaction, and is the ultimate blend of vision, passion and craft.

In this inspiring and interactive session, we'll explore those elements essential to the creation of an expressive image, from image structure to exposure to finding and extracting nuance. I'll share straight prints and finished prints of the same image to illustrate translating the reality in front of the lens to something more personal and that represents the vision in my mind's eye.

While black-and-white silver gelatin prints are my first love, the concepts and techniques behind creating an expressive image apply to all formats and photographic expressions.

Participants should come ready to explore, learn and have fun. Note taking and audio/video recordings for personal use are both accepted and encouraged.

MINI WORKSHOP: Visualization-driven Photography: From Idea to Print with Colleen Miniuk

If you’re looking for a big creative jolt, this mini-workshop is for you!

During this interactive three-hour session, Colleen will share how incorporating visualization techniques into your photographic process can help you record personally meaningful and expressive photographs. Learn how to develop a visualization habit without forming expectations, transform an experience in the field into an effective composition, re-visualize during processing, and refine your ideas through critiquing your work. As Cherie Carter-Scott said, “Ordinary people believe only in the possible. Extraordinary people visualize not what is possible or probable, but rather what is impossible. And by visualizing the impossible, they begin to see it as possible.”

All skill levels welcome. Bring your imagination. Leave inspired to create the impossible as possible.

Photography As Poetry with Harold Davis
Photography is narrative, and some photographs are prose while others are poetry. This presentation examines how we create imagery that conveys powerful poetics in the context of the rush of modern life, and along the way how my life as a photographer has connected with poetry. What lessons are to be learned from thinking of photography as a kind of poetry? As photographers, how can we create more powerful poems. There will be time for Q&A following the presentation.

MINI WORKSHOP: The Magic of the Black and White Print with John Sexton

The Magic of the Black and White Print with John Sexton

This mini workshop will be conducted by John Sexton, along with Anne Larsen, an exceptional photographer in her own right. Though John and Anne's passion is the traditional black and white silver gelatin print, the techniques, concepts, and information presented will be applicable to all photographers making prints - whether analog or digital; black and white or color. The session is open to all photographers wanting to improve their photographic seeing, craft, and printmaking skills.

Photography is a language of light, and this seminar will help participants improve their fluency in this magical language. John and Anne will emphasize not just how to do things, but more importantly, why to take a specific approach to reach an expressive photographic print. A successful black and white photograph is not just a photograph without color. During this session you will see original handcrafted silver gelatin prints by both John and Anne, and maximize this experience this session will be limited to 20 participants. John and Anne will discuss the decision process of making the negatives, as well as decisions and techniques used in making the prints.

John and Anne will share their photographic experiences with you - both successes and mistakes - they have NO SECRETS. The session will be an intense and inspiring experience. Questions will be encouraged, and gladly answered, during the session. Attendees will hopefully leave the session filled with an abundance of useful information, as well as inspiration to take your photography to new levels of proficiency, excitement, enjoyment, and success.

Exploring the nuances of their photographic craft, John and Anne will provide the unique opportunity for participants to see “straight” silver gelatin prints alongside finished prints. Past workshop participants have found this to be most valuable and revealing.

To maximize the experience, participants should bring note-taking materials and arrive with energy, enthusiasm, and an open mind. To minimize distractions the use of laptop computers, tablets, or other electronic devices is discouraged during the classroom sessions, however participants are welcome to make audio recordings of the seminar for their personal use only.

Image Design: Using the Principles of Design to Create More Dramatic Photos with Jennifer King
I began my career in the advertising arena as a designer, creative director then quickly moved into directing photography. It was in these years, that I learned how much design principles played a part in creating effective images. Photography is a journey. It's about the destination and its uniqueness, the world at its best. Understanding how the principles of design affect our visual response to an image can help us to communicate with our photos, and is the key to improving our photography.

Cook's Meadow with Colleen Miniuk

Few places offers so many photographic opportunities as Cook’s Meadow does, which offers breathtaking view of Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, Glacier Point, and Sentinel Rock all within a short walking distance. We’ll start this field session off with a focus on making impactful photographs of the grand landscape: making order out of chaos, honing in on your visual message, working in low-lighting conditions, and using visual language to help you deliver your image. As the sun rises higher in the sky, we’ll continue to apply those techniques but on a smaller scale as we explore more intimate scenes of land and water.

Ahwahnee Meadow with Charlie Cramer

Ahwahnee Meadow is a beautiful meadow that is unjustly overlooked. The meadow provides great views of Half Dome, plus Glacier Point  and Yosemite Falls. It provides an incredible variety of photographic possibilities.  Around the edges of the meadow are some wonderful trees of all kind, including some oaks photographed by Ansel Adams many years ago.  Depending on weather conditions, there will be possibilities from intimate natural details to grand vistas as we explore the meadow in the early morning light. We will be discussing the importance of light, and Charlie will be looking over your shoulder offering constructive and supportive comments on your images during the field session. A brief classroom session is planned at the end of the excursion. A tripod is required for this field session. Participants should bring the photographic equipment (lenses, filters, shades, etc.) they normally use. Participants should also bring the viewing frame received upon check-in to this field session.

Lower Yosemite Falls has many opportunities to explore classic waterscape. As the falls flow over the cliff edge and into a large boulder field, the area offers many excellent opportunities to examine long-exposure compositions. If you like Black and White, you'll find it here! We will focus on understanding elements of art and design, balance, and the range of long-exposure effects while exploring Lower Yosemite Falls. We will look at scenes and talk about how what we see visualize in the frame will translate in post-production. It is highly recommended you bring a set of ND filters and a polarizer. Plan on bringing a sturdy tripod and using several lenses as we will explore compositions from wide-angle to semi-telephoto. Bring your sticky boots and plan on exploring around the side of the stream and nearby boulders. Additionally, I will have a set of 1-Stop, 3-Stop, 6-Stop, and 10-Stop ND filters available to share.

Ansel Adams: In Focus with Alan Ross

Much has been written about the technical aspects of Ansel Adams' images...from his lens choices to his exposure calculations to his darkroom printing techniques. But Ansel was more than the technical data of his images. He was a fun-loving, gregariou, socially conscious working professional who took on any number of commercial assignments to support his family.

In this session, I'll share a "behind the lens" look at the man who inspired so many of us and whom I feel lucky to have called mentor and friend. I'll share anecdotes and memories from my 10+-year association with Ansel, as well as show some seldom seen work.

Cook's Meadow with Charlotte Gibb

Cook’s Meadow offers ample opportunity for a variety of subjects and compositions, from intimate to grand landscapes. Just a short walk from Yosemite Lodge, it offers classic views of Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, Glacier Point, and Sentinel Rock. It is also home to several groves of graceful Black Oaks along with the iconic central Elm tree. The Merced River flows along one side of the meadow, with a lovely bridge that provides opportunity for photographing reflections or water in motion. If we are lucky, we might see wildlife, such as coyote, deer, bobcat, a variety of birds, or even black bear. As we explore this extraordinary meadow, we will focus on creating photographs using the building blocks of composition — patterns, shapes, lines, color, and texture. We'll look for smaller scenes in this overwhelmingly beautiful large landscape using a framing card that I will provide. All the while, I’ll be looking over your shoulder to guide you with your compositions and offering technical support and encouragement.

El Capitan Meadow field session with John Sexton

El Capitan Meadow is one of my favorite photographic locations in Yosemite Valley. I stop and explore the meadow at least once on every visit to Yosemite, and find it always provides inspiration for me. The stately black oaks provide many photographic possibilities, and the meadow sits at the base of the massive granite face of El Capitan. Depending on weather conditions, there will be possibilities from intimate natural details to grand vistas as we explore the meadow in the quiet light of late afternoon and dusk. We will be discussing the importance of light, and the organizing of subject elements within the frame, as key foundations for effective photographs. I am very pleased to be assisted on this field session by Anne Larsen. We will both be looking over your shoulder offering constructive and supportive comments on your images during the field session.

A tripod is required for this field session. Participants should bring the photographic equipment (lenses, filters, shades, etc.) they normally use. Participants should also bring the viewing frame received upon check-in to this field session. A brief classroom session is planned before departing on this excursion.

Upper Cascade Creek with Alan Ross

In the spring and summer, this creek (located just east of the Crane Flat tunnel on highway 120 leading into the Valley) is a raging torrent of snow melt. In winter, it becomes quieter, with patches of snow and ice. Only a few yards away is Tamarack Creek. Both are an easy walk from a small parking lot. Photographic opportunities include forest details, rock strewn stream beds and quiet water. Participants should bring camera gear, including tripod, and dress warmly. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended if you want to go "off road" on some of the dirt trails that parallel the cascade. We'll carpool up from the Lodge. Time permitting, we can also move on to other locations on return to the Valley. At all stops, I will be there to offer support, encouragement, and assistance with composition, exposure, lens choice and anything else you might be struggling with. If you are working with a newer or unfamiliar digital camera, please make sure you have access to the manual.

SUPER SESSION: Photographic Creativity with Colleen Miniuk, Franka Gabler and Jennifer King

2:30-3:30 Creating with the Creative Process with Colleen Miniuk: Are you tired of photographing the same iconic subjects over and over? Have your photographs become safe or boring? Are you frustrated with finding your voice or style? Creative experts agree: if you’ve ever had two thoughts cross your brain ever in your lifetime (not even at the same time!), you have the capacity to be creative. In this presentation, Colleen will review where creativity comes from, how to leverage analytical and creative parts of the brain, how to expand your idea bank, and how incorporating the Wallas model of creativity in your photographic process can help you create unique and personally meaningful images that go beyond the cliché. She’ll encourage you--and give you specific ways--to stop searching for your voice and use the one you already have to make images you’re proud of.

3:30-4:30 Creating Emotional Impact with Franka Gabler: In order to resonate with the viewer a successful photograph needs to tell a story. Also, in order to connect with a viewer, it needs to create emotional impact. It is not enough to just correctly expose and compose. It is critical to be able to recognize the potential of a scene so we can decide how to interpret it - such as which aspects to emphasize to best capture the essence of the scene and how it made us feel, or to communicate what we want to express. The presentation analyzes several essential components that contribute in depicting mood and creating emotional impact, such as choice of light, color, contrast, weather, and/or shutter speed exposure.

Mini Workshop: The advantages of using Adobe Smart Objects with Charlie Cramer

An incredible way to get the absolute most out of your images!  I’ve been using it for four years now.  Smart Objects are available if you do RAW developing in Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw—and then open the  image in Photoshop for final tweaking.

Raw provides the most power for doing global corrections. But, I prefer Photoshop for local adjustments and other adjustments. A Smart Object provides access to both the RAW adjustments and the sophisticated controls of Photoshop—at any time. Incredibly versatile! I will discuss the advantages and a few disadvantages of using this workflow.

I will be supplying some images for people to use in following along, so having a laptop would be helpful. Although this presentation would also work as a lecture.

Capturing and Crafting the Realistic HDR Image with Tim Cooper
Landscape photography has a long history of post processing.  From Ansel Adams to John Sexton, the master photographers have all made use of cutting edge technology to turn their good captures into great prints.  While High Dynamic Range images are more commonplace these days, too many end up looking like cartoons due to inaccurate shooting and over processing. With a little coaching, controlling these aspects of the technique is a snap.

In this lecture Tim will begin with a thorough explanation of how to carefully expose your images.  Using Manual Mode, the Spot Meter, and auto bracketing you’ll be able to create a perfect series of images for effortless blending back on the computer.  Lightroom adjustments such as Chromatic Aberration, pre-sharpening, and Camera Profiles are important first step alterations, so Tim shows you how to pre-process and create presets for maximum speed and quality.  The lecture finishes an in depth explanation of how to blend your images together on the computer for realistic and believable imagery. Important HDR spoilers such as highlight saturation and contrast as well as shadow brightness will be covered in detail to help you understand the basis for your adjustments.   Using the HDR program, Photomatix, Tim guides you through the sliders and menus to demystify the entire HDR blending process.

Join The Realistic HDR Image author Tim Cooper for a jam packed lecture on creating realistic High Dynamic Range imagery in both Color and Black and White.

Class Topics include:
•    Using your Spot Meter
•    Calculating the correct exposures for the HDR capture
•    When to use Auto-bracket
•    Keys to creating Realistic HDR images
•    Using Lightroom’s Merge to HDR function
• Using the HDR software, Photomatix

John, assisted by Anne Larsen, will describe, and show silver gelatin prints of some of Ansel’s most iconic images to reveal the creative transformation from the negative to the final print, progressing through the various creative steps in the making of a finely crafted expressive print. This session will provide the opportunity for participants to see “straight” silver gelatin prints alongside finished prints. Past workshop participants have found this to be most valuable and revealing.

There will be a thorough discussion of Adams’ working procedures, and underlying thought processes, that he used to transform his negatives into unforgettable images that have inspired many for decades. Ansel’s skill as a printmaker in the traditional darkroom is legendary. The concepts that Ansel incorporated into his own photography are relevant and valuable foundations for photographers working in any approach to photography.

Ansel was a generous, and gifted, educator, and never had secrets. This session will continue that tradition as John attempts to provide useful photographic information as well as inspiration to all that attend. Questions will be encouraged, and gladly answered, during the session. In order to maximize the experience of viewing original photographic prints, this session will be limited to 20 participants.

To maximize the experience for all, participants should bring note-taking materials and arrive with energy, enthusiasm, and an open mind. To minimize distractions the use of laptop computers, tablets, or other electronic devices is discouraged during this session, however participants are welcome to make audio recordings of the mini workshop for their personal use only.

GENERAL SESSION: Perception and Photography, with an emphasis on viewing images more accurately on a monitor with Charlie Cramer
Charles Cramer will present a lecture on perception in photography, and how to percieve things more accurately on a monitor.  In printing, a common complaint  is, “my prints come out too dark,” even with a well-profiled monitor and printer.   I will discuss how to get around this, usually by changing the “context” of how you view images.  I'll also talk about ways to improve an image using various techniques that come from the world of painting.   Plus, I will also cover a few miscellaneous techniques that I routinely use to make my images stronger and more compelling.

Twenty minutes each, limited to one participant per session. Actual prints preferred, but images on a flash drive are also OK. The Zen of Photography with Harold Davis

Originally created as a Google talk, I have successfully presented "The Zen of Photography" many times to a number of different kinds of audiences. This presentation will work to establish that we are our own best photographic friends, but to make the most of this we must know ourselves. There's more to life than a cubicle, and at its best a camera can help know and explore the world around us. Along the way, I'll show my work with flowers, landscapes, cityscapes, models in motion, and more. There will be time for Q&A following the presentation.

Yosemite Lodge River Bend with Charlotte Gibb

Yosemite Lodge sits next to a bend in the Merced River that offers beautiful views of Half Dome and Sentinel Rock. This time of year, the river is quiet, so there are lovely reflections. Cottonwoods grow along the banks here, their white trunks create opportunity to compose abstract photographs. As we wander along the riverbank, we will focus on creating photographs using the building blocks of composition — patterns, shapes, lines, color, and texture. We'll look for smaller scenes in this overwhelmingly beautiful large landscape using a framing card that I will provide. All the while, I’ll be looking over your shoulder to guide you with your compositions and offering technical support and encouragement.

SUPER SESSION: Photographic Inspiration with Michael Frye, William Neill and Alan Ross

The Language of Photography with Michael Frye: Photography is a visual language. We've been learning visual language since we were babies, and we all understand it at a sophisticated level. But it's one thing to understand a language, and another to speak it fluently - which is what we have to do as photographers.

In this presentation Michael will explain how visual language works, and how you can use this knowledge to make compelling photographs that tell a clear story and convey a mood.

Landscapes of The Spirit with William Neill: I will be sharing a selection of my favorite images taken over four decades and sharing some thoughts on why I photograph.

MINI WORKSHOP: Nightscapes - Create Instead of Capture with Tim Cooper

Thanks to incredible advances in digital technology, Night Photography is gaining in popularity across every discipline of image making. And for good reason-its fun!  Join the growing group of landscape photographers who are staying out after dark to expand their shooting time and creating whole new dimensions in landscape photography.

Shooting the Milky Way and creating circular star trails are just a couple of well-known techniques open to the intrepid photographer.  We can also use the moon to illuminate entire landscapes, emphasize cloud formations or behave as a second sunset. For the really adventurous, advancements in LED technology have given us a host of new flashlights and illumination tools to creatively portray the night landscape.  Using your own light source to illuminate the scene provides unrivaled creativity in rendering your final image.  Experimentation with color, intensity and angle of the light source creates limitless possibilities and adds yet another technique to capture the natural world.

Come join Night Photography co-author Tim Cooper for this three-hour workshop as he lays out the essentials and delves into the creativity of capturing the natural world at night.

Class Topics include:
•    Important Camera Settings
•    When to use Long Exposure Noise Reduction
•    Focusing in the dark
•    Calculating a good exposure
•    Capturing the Milky Way
•    400 rule
•    6 stop rule
•    Creating Star Trails
•    Capturing the Landscape with a night sky

Lower Yosemite Fall with Jack Curran

GENERAL SESSION: Keeping it Fresh with Colleen Miniuk
No matter how long you’ve been practicing photography, inevitably we feel stuck, uninspired, and even bored with photography—which can be frustrating when we are surrounded by so much beauty. In this presentation, Colleen will introduce “flow” and how and when we experience it—and what to do when we just aren’t feeling it. Learn how to generate new ideas for your work, deepen your relationship with the land, and ultimately create more unique, meaningful images in familiar places.

Colleen will share specific ways to tap into your creative capabilities to keep your work fresh and exciting by reviewing concepts like the Wallas Model of Creativity, conceptual blending, mindfulness, managing expectations, and divergent thinking—all ways to help keep the creative spirit within you alive, no matter where your travels take you.
