The Magic of the Black and White Print with John Sexton

This mini workshop will be conducted by John Sexton, along with Anne Larsen, an exceptional photographer in her own right. Though John and Anne's passion is the traditional black and white silver gelatin print, the techniques, concepts, and information presented will be applicable to all photographers making prints - whether analog or digital; black and white or color. The session is open to all photographers wanting to improve their photographic seeing, craft, and printmaking skills.

Photography is a language of light, and this seminar will help participants improve their fluency in this magical language. John and Anne will emphasize not just how to do things, but more importantly, why to take a specific approach to reach an expressive photographic print. A successful black and white photograph is not just a photograph without color. During this session you will see original handcrafted silver gelatin prints by both John and Anne, and maximize this experience this session will be limited to 20 participants. John and Anne will discuss the decision process of making the negatives, as well as decisions and techniques used in making the prints.

John and Anne will share their photographic experiences with you - both successes and mistakes - they have NO SECRETS. The session will be an intense and inspiring experience. Questions will be encouraged, and gladly answered, during the session. Attendees will hopefully leave the session filled with an abundance of useful information, as well as inspiration to take your photography to new levels of proficiency, excitement, enjoyment, and success.

Exploring the nuances of their photographic craft, John and Anne will provide the unique opportunity for participants to see “straight” silver gelatin prints alongside finished prints. Past workshop participants have found this to be most valuable and revealing.

To maximize the experience, participants should bring note-taking materials and arrive with energy, enthusiasm, and an open mind. To minimize distractions the use of laptop computers, tablets, or other electronic devices is discouraged during the classroom sessions, however participants are welcome to make audio recordings of the seminar for their personal use only.
